Shelby Jean Thompson Terrell of Kennesaw, formerly of Marietta, passed away on April 5, 2022. She was the daughter of Alva and Fannie Mae Thompson. Visitation and Celebration of Life service will be held Saturday, April 23, 2022 at Marietta First United Methodist Church in Marietta with the family receiving friends at 1pm followed by the Celebration of Life at 2pm. A reception will follow the service.
Shelby was a South Georgia girl, having been born in Vidalia, and raised in Douglas/Coffee County. She
graduated from South Georgia College and moved to Marietta in the late 1950s to teach school in Cobb County, enjoying a long career with Powder Springs, Fitzhugh Lee, LaBelle and Milford Elementary Schools. She was a lifelong United Methodist and member of Marietta First United Methodist Church. Up until the time when she couldn’t attend in person, she was a member of Faith Builders Sunday School class, the United Methodist Women/Joanne England Circle, and the Blue Bottle Book Club.
She was an ardent baseball fan all of her life. She learned to keep score at an early age and was the official score keeper for many youth baseball tournaments and always attended the games in which her husband, son and granddaughter were involved. She enjoyed all levels of the game, from little league all the way to the major league. She especially loved the Braves, and enjoyed going to spring training, going to the games, and watching them on tv. She was happiest between opening day in the spring, through the final out of the last game of the World Series.
Shelby was a natural storyteller, and volunteered at many schools to share her stories
with elementary, middle and high school students. After retiring from teaching, she volunteered with “Project Light”, a program that teaches English to non English speaking adults.
She was a competitive lover of card games and board games. She and her canasta/domino group played regularly for over forty years.
One of her many spiritual gifts was hospitality. She loved to host friends and family, and she loved to
cook for them, and make sure everything was ‘just so’. She had a knack for making people laugh, just by hearing her laugh, so she was a great party guest or hostess!
She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother, Reade A. Thompson and her beloved husband
of thirty one years, Jesse L. Terrell.
She is survived by: Her son, Jerry A. Terrell, his wife, Carlene, their daughter Jessica Morgan Menjivar and her husband, Darwin. Her daughter, Dena (Dee) Terrell Smith, her husband, Steven, their daughter, Julie Yanes (her husband, Noe) their son, Eric (his wife, Ashley) and their grandchildren—Ava, Aiden, Rowan, Noah, Freya and Finley. Also surviving are many cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.
In lieu of flowers, donations should be made in memory of Shelby to the Music Ministry at Marietta First United Methodist Church, mariettafumc.org or to All Sports Booster Club at Osborne High School, paypal.com/paypalme/ohsbooster;[email protected], pw- GoCards1!
