V.W. was born in Atlanta, Georgia and was the son of the late Virlyn William Chafin, Sr. and Lois Aileen Wehunt Chafin. He currently lived in Stone Mountain, Georgia with his wife Patsy of fifty years, and is survived by siblings Dianne Patterson of Woodstock, Georgia, Ellen Derreth of Marietta, Georgia, and Mark Chafin of Marietta, Georgia.
V.W. graduated from Southwest High School in 1966 and participated in a drama class and play. He worked and retired from the Federal Reserve Bank for 47 years. He began this long career in the Vault and eventually progressed to Manager of the Cash Services Department. He was awarded the 2000 President’s Award for Excellence and was presented with a large ivory statue of the American Eagle, which he proudly displayed in his home. He also worked six years at the former BB&T Bank, where he met his and Patsy’s dear friend Dr. Margaret Hopper.
V.W. was a long-time fan of the Georgia Bulldogs and regularly attended the Georgia/Florida game in Jacksonville each year with his close friend Mike Estes. It is only fitting that V.W. passed away the weekend of the big game that he loved so much, and the DAWGS won!
V.W. and Patsy loved to travel to Wetumpka, Alabama (and Las Vegas in their younger years) to try their luck at the casinos. He loved Elvis Presley and was even able to attend one of his concerts. He serenated Patsy, when he met her, with Elvis’ songs “Burning Love” and “Blue Suede Shoes.”
Aside from the Georgia Bulldogs, he enjoyed watching the Atlanta Braves and Atlanta Falcons. He had a fascination for guns and was an aspiring hunter. He was very much a jokester and made people laugh with made-up songs and his impersonations of famous people. He will be missed by his loving family, Dianne, Ellen and Mark, Patsy’s family Rick, Denise, Linda and Rayford, and lifelong friends Susan Smith, Mike Estes, Rick Gower, Doc Hopp, and the late Steve Tolbert.
A graveside service will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 05, 2024, at 11:00 at Kennesaw Memorial Park, Lakeview Section, located at 1306 Whitlock Avenue, Marietta, Georgia 30064.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Lung Association, the Alzheimer’s Association, or the charity of choice.
