March 13, 1927 ~ November 17, 2023
With his niece by his side, Dmytro (Metro) Nyszczuk passed away peacefully at Pinecrest Home for the Aged, November 17, 2023 at the age of 96.
He was born in the small village of Wysozanka, Ukraine on March 13, 1927 to parents Iwan (John) Nyszczuk and Anastasia Nyszczuk .
In February of 1951, at the age of 19, Dmytro immigrated to Canada, making his way by train from Halifax, NS. to Kenora, Ontario. Here, he was hired on as a general labourer in the logging industry.
Working different jobs from bush cutter to skid operator, Dmytro proved his determination and hard work ethic.
Some of the places he worked and bunked in his career, were Northwest Angle, Camp Robinson, and Camp 314. The work was dangerous, and physically demanding, but the camp food was plentiful and delicious.
Dmytro had a winning smile, and a kind and generous spirit. His quick-witted humour endeared him to many and cemented lifelong friendships.
Becoming a Canadian Citizen, buying his forever home, getting his driver’s license and purchasing his first of many vehicles were some of his proudest accomplishments.
His diligence, and thrifty nature enabled Dmytro to retire early, which gave him plenty of leisure time to dine at his favourite and friendly restaurant A & W or browse every local store in search of bargains.
Dmytro was an avid Wrestling fan, enjoying the antics of all the participants. He watched the news daily, often voicing his political views, and concerns about world affairs.
Dmytro took pride in his independence and was able to maintain a comfortable life in his home until 2021, when his health circumstances changed. Upon moving into Pinecrest, he endeavored to enjoy his remaining years. His ultimate goal was “To beat the Queen, and reach the age of 100! “Sadly, it was not to be.
Having no children of his own, Dmytro will be profoundly missed by his nieces and nephew; Richard Nyszczuk (Christine) of Ardrossan, AB., Monique Adams (Randy) of Selkirk, MB., and Marie-Jeanne Bunn (David Kubisewsky) of Kenora, Ontario.
We, Dmytro’s family, would like to thank all of the caring attentive staff, in all departments at Pinecrest Home for the Aged, as well as the wonderful volunteers who brightened his days, in all ways possible.
A special thank you goes out to Mike Limerick, who kept each of us family members updated. Your compassionate visits while we sat with our uncle, eased us through a difficult time.
A warm Thank You to Jody Parnell, whose visits to our uncle always brightened his days. You effortlessly connected with Dmytro by sharing your stories and photos of the “present day” Camp 314 area. He truly enjoyed your friendly visits.
We gratefully acknowledge those that participated in the “Honour Walk” that was coordinated between Pinecrest and Brown Funeral Home & Cremation Centre. It was an emotional start, to the final tribute of a life well lived.
Many thanks to all of the staff at Brown Funeral Home & Cremation Centre, who continue to help us navigate and honour Dmytro’s last wishes.
At Dmytro’s request, cremation has taken place. There will be no funeral or memorial service. We, the grieving family will gather privately to celebrate his life raised as brothers, Dmytro and Bill Nyszczuk will be interred together in the Lake of the Woods Cemetery, as per their wishes.
