It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Douglas (Doug, Dougie) Frederick Baker, on March 8, 2014, at the age of 66.
Douglas was an only child, and was predeceased by his parents, Fred and Catherine (Kay) Baker. He will be remembered and missed by his special cousins John and Val Baker, his aunt Grace McGeachy, his Uncle Jim Baker, his cousin Ruth Maluish and their families; as well as many other extended family members in Kenora and across Canada.
Doug was born in Winnipeg, and lived in Kenora as a child. He then moved to Toronto, and Willlowdale became home for him for the next 20 or so years. Doug was always ready to tell a story about Toronto and had countless memories of good times there. He was a diehard Leafs and Blue Jays fan, although in later years he had to divide his loyalties between the Leafs and the Winnipeg Jets. Summers meant time spent at the family camp at Blindfold Lake, family picnics on Lake of the Woods, working at Rushing River Park, and visiting with the neighbours [thanks Leanne, Reynold and family]. When his father retired, the family returned permanently to Kenora, and Doug became a familiar face around town, especially at the arena. Doug (Boom Boom) was the “Number One Fan” (with team jackets to prove it) of the Broncos and the various Thistle teams. His cowbell and “Eat Em Raw!” yell will forever resonate in the walls of the Kenora Recreation Centre. Doug was a regular visitor to the Lakeside Inn (thank you Mark and staff), the Lakeside Mini Mart, Century Cinema, and many of the merchants along Main Street. He was passionate about the clock at City Hall and complained when it was not working perfectly. Doug was a snowbird with his parents during this period, in both Florida and Arizona. In his later years, before his final move to Benedickson Court, Doug resided at the LaVerendrye Apartments and appreciated the kindness and friendship of the residents there [special thanks to Jim].
Many thanks to Dr. Jim Beveridge for his care over many years; and to Dr. David Kyle, Dr. Rhonda Diamond in the final hours and the 2E staff at the Lake of the Woods District Hospital. To Leah at CCAC, the staff at Revera, and to Jan and the staff at the Community Support Program - thank you for your assistance and support to Doug in his final months.
Following immediate cremation, a celebration of Doug’s life will be held this summer at the Lakeside Inn, at the time of his interment at the Lake of the Woods Cemetery. Friends and family are invited to attend, bringing stories and memories of Doug. Details will be announced closer to the date.
