Gordon Frederick McKie
It is with profound sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Gordon McKie on Saturday, December 10, 2016 at the age of 44.
Gordon was born on March 9, 1972 at the Lake of the Woods District Hospital.
He is survived by his father David McKie (Wanda), mother Joanne Niemcow, and step mother Marlene McKie.
He also leaves to mourn his beloved sister Cheryl Lynne McKie- Boychuk (Paul) and his two nephews Zachery McKie and Jordan Boychuk.
He is also survived by several aunts, uncles and cousins.
Gordon was predeceased by his step father John Niemcow, grandparents David and Marguerite McKie and Fred and Muriel Houghton.
Gordon was born with a condition called Cornelia de Langes Syndrome. He was able to spend his early years at home. Little was known back then about CDLS, so a very hard decision was made to have Gord live in the Northwest regional Centre in Thunder Bay. He resided there until 1988, when he returned to Kenora as a client of the Kenora Association for Community Living.
As a client of KACL, Gord lived in several foster homes until he was relocated to his current home on Third Street North. Here he had an apartment of his own, and a back yard to enjoy, that even included a garden.
Gordon was an enigma. He did have his bad days. But on the good days his smile was contagious. A true gentle spirit lived within him. You could tell by his smirk that he was up to something and by his smile that he had a real good time. The staff commented several times that somewhere inside Gord was a wonderful young man.
One of the highlights of Gords life was when Pete Edwards and a couple other staff took him to Niagara Falls to the Cornelia de Langes World Conference. Here he was seen by the professionals who have researched this syndrome. They were able to bring back and implement new care Plans that made Gords life a lot more comfortable.
Gords family would like to thank all of the KACL staff who worked with him over the years. You made his life more comfortable and provided a safe and caring environment. You always seemed to go the extra mile.
A Memorial Service for Gord will be held at Brown Funeral Home & Cremation Centre on Monday, December 19, 2016 at 11:00 am with the Pastor Cathy
