

He is survived by his siblings, sisters Josephine Elworthy, Rosemary (Claude) Champagne, Jane Read, Christine (John) McLaughin, sister-in-law Susan Shiska and nieces and nephews Karen Burke, Gail Wetendorf, Jeff (Candice) Wetendorf, Melody Cory, David (Brandee) Shiska, Ronald, Rachel and Rosalyn Read, great nieces and nephews too numerous to mention but dear to his heart.
He was predeceased by his parents Nick and Mary, brother Nick, brothers-in-law Bernie Read and Ken Elworthy.
Mike loved fishing with Nick and nephews Jeff and Ron and also going to camp with Nick, Susan and family. His niece Gail spent time taking her grandmother and Michael to Church and she also bowled with Michael.
Special Olympics played a big part in his life. He won medals for swimming and bowling, made many lifelong friends. He was top fundraiser for the Special Olympics.
Tuesdays were spent at the “Arts Hub” socializing with friends, painting and crafts, he also loved drumming. Thank you to Leeann and Tersoo.
Mike loved going to Pow Wow’s with Christine and John, he loved their music and danced for hours. Sister Jane spent a lot of time with Mike, they enjoyed playing Yahtzee, laughing and eating too much.
Happy times were spent with the Champagne family in Ottawa also seeing good friends Moe, Randy and niece Karen.
He loved swimming with Claude, then seeing the guys at A&W for coffee.
The guys from KACL took him swimming twice a week. When Michael went to Pinecrest, these same guys visited there. Special thanks to Darren who sang and played guitar for him.
He lived with Rose and Claude for 22 years, loved spending winters in Texas with them where he also made many friends. Enjoyed time with his special friend Darwin for happy hour and shrimp outings.
He’d give you a big smile, hug and say don’t cry, everything will be okay.
He was a lifetime member of St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Church, where Father John would always welcome him and say ‘how is my good friend Michael today?’.
A Celebration of Life will be held on March 7, 2026, at 11:00am at St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Church followed by lunch, interment will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Alzheimer’s Society in Michael’s name.
