December 21, 1933 – December 22, 2017
It is with great sadness, that the family of Rose Pekarchuk announces her peaceful passing in the late evening of December 22, 2017. She was 84.
Rose will be lovingly remembered by her son Brian, daughter-in-law Deborah (McLean), sister-in–law Joey, numerous nieces, nephews, extended family and dear friends at Pinecrest Home for the Aged.
Rose was predeceased by her parents, John and Sophie Petruniak, her dear husband Michael Pekarchuk (2003), his parents William and Mary Pekarchuk, cherished sister Mary and brother-in-law Philip Shamlock, brother-in-law Anthony Pekarchuk, brother-in-law John Pekarchuk, sister-in-law Theresa Pekarchuk, brother-in-law Elmer Cederwall and sister-in-law Julia Cederwall.
Rose, a lifelong resident of Kenora, was born on the family homestead on the Carlton Road. After completing high school, she attended Mrs. Fraser’s Business School which led to her employment in the office at St. Joseph’s Hospital.
In early 1952, she met Mike Pekarchuk at a country dance. They were married in September of that same year. Her role in life changed to “stay at home Mom” with the arrival of their son Brian in 1957.
Rose and Mike celebrated 50 years of marriage in 2002. They were true outdoor enthusiasts. The four distinct seasons in Northwestern Ontario provided special meaning for Rose and Mike, there were many activities that they enjoyed wholeheartedly, together. In spring time there was trout fishing and gardening. Summer was spent pickerel fishing, blueberry picking and enjoying cabin time. The fall brought mushrooms to pick and preserve along with long walks while hunting. In winter she loved to ice fish and spent countless hours preparing her beautiful perogies for future family gatherings.
In her senior years, Rose was involved on the St. Alban’s Cathedral Women’s Auxillary, TOPS, Gardner House Social Committee and the Pinecrest Resident’s council. She made many friends during her life in Kenora due to her quiet, friendly and uncompromising nature. She always said that she lived a “quiet life.” Translated, this meant a “rich life.” She conveyed unconditional love to her family and always had time and a smile for her friends. She will be deeply missed.
Our heartfelt thanks to Lorne Shamlock and Kay McLean for their kindness, care and concern over the past several years. Special thanks to the Pinecrest Care Team, especially Unit #3 who provided Rose with not only a place to live but a home filled with kindness, compassion and friends. Our sincere thanks to Dr. Thomas and the Palliative Care Staff for their comfort, attentiveness and skill.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Pinecrest Home for the Aged, 1220 Valley Drive, Kenora, Ontario P9N 2W7 or the charity of one’s choice.
Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, January 13, 2018 at 2:00 pm at Pinecrest Home for the Aged with Pastor Robert Wittmeier officiating.
