Ruth grew up in Kenora and lived here for most of her life in the family home, with summers spent working at the family tourist camp at Moore Bay Lodge.
Ruth was predeceased by her parents, Birger and Signe, and many family members including her special aunt, Margaret Jordan, and her brother-in-law, Bob Nickoley. She is survived by her sister, Mim, of Chicago, and nephew Charlie Nickoley of Alabama.
She was very close with her family in Kenora. Cousins Kathy Johnston and Bill (Marion) Jordan were more like siblings to her, and she spent a lot of time with them and their families, including Bill and Marion’s son Andrew (Courtney) Jordan, daughter Kristan (Eric) Valade and their children, Sage, Heather, and Jasmine. She used to love getting together for a weekly “wine night” with family and enjoying a glass of wine and a Swedish cookie while sharing stories and laughs.
Her close extended family is too large to mention everyone directly but know that she held you all in very great affection. She loved to host traditional Christmas dinners for all the relatives. Her Swedish meatballs, almond torte, and pepparkakor wish cookies were always a hit.
Ruth was an avid walker and was often seen along the habourfront to the hospital and back several times a day, although the trips got shorter as Parkinson’s slowed her down.
Ruth loved her job as a nurse, working as both a home care nurse and pediatric nurse. She respected the work of Doctors Without Borders and supported them as a favourite charity. She was a regular volunteer at Birchwood Care Home and the cat shelter and donated to numerous causes.
In her retirement, Ruth joined a lot of clubs and enjoyed bowling, bridge, and Scottish dancing. In recent years, she really appreciated the companionship of the coffee group at the Senior Centre, where she was a regular.
Celebration of Life will be held on Friday, December 13, 2024 at 10:30am at Brown Funeral Home & Cremation Centre with Pastor Cathy Giroux officiating.
