It is with profound sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Sharron O’Dell Metail, in the evening hours of Friday, February 9th, 2024. Mom peacefully entered eternal rest in the loving embrace of her grandchildren Jourdan and Douglas at Pinecrest home for the aged following a well fought battle with Alzheimer’s and Dementia.
Mom was born on July 16th, 1946, in Port Arthur, Ontario. She was an only child to parents Tommy and Minnie Saunders, with whom she held a very special bond. She spent her younger years moving often due to her father’s job with the railroad, travelling between Sioux Lookout, Montreal, and Reddit where she would fondly recall time spent with her cousins’ aunts, uncles, and close friends.
Sharron was predeceased by her father Thomas Saunders (1983) Her mother Minnie (Nee) Mulholland (1988), an infant brother William Everett (1948) and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, and in-laws.
Left to cherish her memories are her loving husband Mervin Metail, Her children, Arron Krawicki, Raymond Krawicki, Ryan Krawicki and Kara-Launa Kardal (Doug), Rhonda-Lynn Praud (Brian), Curtis Metail (Rachel) and in-laws Glennis and Peter Stewart. Her Grandchildren, CJ Gallant, Shane Gallant (Jessica), Shalynne Vanasse (Harley), Chase Surovy, Jourdan Kardal, Alyssa Romaniuk (Dilon), Daija Krawicki, Douglas Kardal, Anissa, Saige, Sienna Krawicki, and their mother Maria Campanella. Her Great Grandchildren, Adelynn, Lilliana, Declan, Dante, Azrel, Maya-Lynn and Sienna. As well as many cousins on both sides of her family.
In her early teens the family ultimately settled in Kenora where they made it her permanent home.
Sharron completed her education at Lakewood Highschool and married our father Arthur in 1966, together they raised four children and built two homes.
Her love for her children was always divided equally. She would always put our wants and needs before her own, possessing the ability to know when we needed her most. She guided us all through wisdom, health, and happiness. Mom was always an active participant in our activities of choice and our biggest supporter. Despite navigating through hard times herself she continued to be our mentor, advisor, cheerleader and even jokingly our lawyer, but most of all our friend. She listened intently and supported wisely.
Momma Cheese, as she was affectionately known to many of her children’s friends, would always have an open door or piece of appropriate advice. We were her happy moments, watching and helping us grow and progress. She never hesitated to mention how proud she was of us all.
Family was important and over the years friends became like family to her. While raising her young family she began her career in the customer service industry. Most notably Chicken Villa, The Portrait Studio, Home Hardware, and McDiarmid Lumber. She was most recognized as the “paint expert”. Mom was your go too gal as she excelled at paint perfection. She would embrace her coworkers and created a work/family environment. Her interactions over the years with so many in the community resulted in lifelong friendships that she held dear to her heart.
Our mother was a dreamer, always willing to test and try new things, and in 1995 while taking some much-needed time to reflect and explore, she encountered a past high school sweetheart, and the love story began. On April 28th, 2000, our mother married her beloved and adoring husband Mervin Metail. Together they combined their lives, families, and embraced each other’s children, grandchildren, and eventually great grandchildren. They shared their passion for travelling, country music, dancing, camping, fishing and simply watching the sunset. Sharron and Merv cherished their grandchildren and passed on teachings of simpler times. They felt blessed with any moment of time that was spent with them. Sharron and Merv eventually committed themselves as local Watkins consultants and excelled, allowing them to reach new heights and were frequently recognized for their achievements with accolades of awards, travel, and the opportunity to see new places and meet great people. Together for 29 years, they enjoyed many memorable moments and re-wrote their own history. Seeing the joy and love they shared, at times just being their silly and goofy selves, guaranteed their perfection for one another.
Mom loved to garden. This could be seen through her meticulously placed and weeded yard, vegetable, and flower gardens. She would often be seen strolling her neighbourhood with her dog’s max and missy where you could often get caught in a pleasant conversation. Mom was a peacekeeper and was talented in bringing people together. She assisted other through their own hardships. Sharron was well known for her zest for life and the remarkable strength to gracefully endure all that it delivered. Mom’s sense of humour and wit was always at the ready and she will fondly be remembered for her kind and generous soul, her smile and grace and her infectious laugh.
The family would like to take the time to express gratitude to the entire staff at Pinecrest home for the aged, for their excellent care during Moms stay. Sincere thanks to Rylee, Kim and Janice for their insight, assistance, and endearing friendships throughout the past few years. To unit 4 staff at Pinecrest, particularly Deb & “Cheese”, for the remarkable care and compassion provided to Mom and her close family, especially in those last few hours.
