Charles E. Shields was born in Logan County, Nebraska on November 8, 1923, the son of James and Alvina (Swisher) Shields. The family later moved to Colorado.. When Charles was 7 years of age, his father passed away so his mother gathered up her young family and returned to Arnold, Nebraska. There with the help of family and friends she kept the family together. His early years were spent working and living with several families in the area, all of which treated him as if he were their own. He grew up happy, friendly and always kind to others. He had a astonishing work ethic, always taking his wages home to his mother to help support the family. As a freshman at Arnold High School, Charles met and fell in love with his future wife, Joyce Landrey. They were married on July 20, 1944. He served his country during WWII in the Army Air Force as a member of the ground crew, fueling B-17’s and B-29’s on Okinawa. He was honorably discharged from the service . In November of 1957 Charles and Joyce and their two daughters moved to Kimball. In 1962 and 1964 their family grew with the addition of two little boys. His life will be celebrated because he was a loving husband, father, grandfather and friend, always loving, caring for and teaching his children.
