Kay M. Hafeman

Kathryn M. Hafeman, 86, formerly of Kimball, died at Medical Center of the Rockies in Loveland, Colorado on Friday, November 14, 2014. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, November 19, 2014 at the St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Kimball with Father Robert Karnish officiating. Burial will be in the Kimball Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home on Tuesday from 1:00 until 7:00 p.m. to sign the register book and leave condolences for the family. Christian Wake service will be held at 7:00 p.m. at the Cantrell Funeral Home in Kimball on Tuesday. A memorial service will also be held on November 20th at Good Samaritan Center at 1:30pm in the Chapel. The services for Kathryn have been entrusted to the Cantrell Funeral Home.

Kathryn “Kay” Hafeman was the first born to Frank and Regina Schinzel on February 5, 1928 in Kearney, Nebraska. Kay graduated from St. Patrick's High School in Sidney, Ne in 1944. She moved to Kimball to work for the Fred Lukassen family the next year. She married Arthur henry Hafeman November 19th, 1946. They farmed on the south divide in Kimball County for over 50 years and were very active in the Kimball community.

She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Kimball and very involved in church activities including the Rosary Altar Society. She was currently a member of The Lady of the Valley Catholic church in Windsor. Kay was a Chamber Ambassador in Kimball for many years. She was involved with many organizations including Home Extension Club. She was recognized as 'Homemaker of the Year"" and with her husband honored as ""Outstanding Farmer"" of Kimball County. She was known as an avid bowler, golfer, bridge player and gardener. She volunteered at the Kimball Hospital and for Meals on Wheels as well as many other groups over the years.

In 1997 she moved into The Vista Villa Retirement Center and then to The Good Samaritan Retirement Center in Windsor, Co. in 2009. In both retirement centers she was considered ""the life of the community"". She established the social hour, taught bridge and organized the game night at Good Sam's. She also served as president of the Resident's Council. Many people have commented on her ""spunk"" and ""get it done attitude"" but always with class. She was a Grand Lady.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Arthur, and her parents Frank and Regina Schinzel. She is survived by three sisters and four brothers, her children: Carol (Roy) Freeman, Daniel (Donna), Douglas (Diann), and Gregory (Lindy), nine grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.
