Angela Clair Cheeves Kelly was born in Milledgeville, Georgia on July 24, 1941 to James Lawton “Pete” and Lillian Leaptrott Cheeves. She was raised and educated in her home town, moved to Kingsport, TN in 1961, and began a lifetime love for the area. She died at HVMC early Friday morning, May 10 due to several complications that ultimately led to cardiac arrest. She will be missed by all who knew and loved her.
While living in Kingsport, Angela worked for the director and staff of the University of Tennessee contingent at the Kingsport University Center. Later she owned and operated East Tennessee Personnel, a staffing and personnel business in Kingsport. She was active in the Rotary Club, the Kingsport Chamber of Commerce, and the Junior League. She was a talented vocalist singing at community events and service organizations. She supported and worked with Sing Out Kingsport. She was a long time member of First Baptist Church in Kingsport – especially the Friendship Sunday School class from which she drew comfort and fellowship. She was quite active with the church’s youth programs in her earlier days.
Angela loved her flowers and strived to make her yard a place of beauty. In her later years she could frequently be seen surveying its contents from the driver’s seat of her golf cart. She enjoyed traveling, which included Europe, Caribbean cruises, and in-country visits to New York, Chicago, and New Orleans, to name a few. She was a good cook and collected numerous recipes for “trial runs” at home.
Although a cancer survivor, neuropathy and resulting medical conditions reduced her mobility and ultimately forced her to seek down-sized living quarters. Additional ongoing health problems kept her inside much of the time. Neverthelesss she pursued her interests with dignity and enthusiasm.
Angela was preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by her husband William C (Bill) Kelly; 4 children – Tom Banks Jr (Christy), Burt Banks (Kari), Lee Banks (Patti), and Carrie Banks Brown (Brent); 11 grandchildren, 1 great granddaughter, 2 step children and 1 step grandson; brother - Charles L Cheeves (Barbara), nephews Charles “Chuck” Cheeves Jr and Jeff Cheeves (Tanya), and 4 great nieces/nephews.
A memorial service will be held at the First Baptist Church, Kingsport on Friday, May 17 at 2:00 p.m. The family will receive friends in the church atrium following the service. In lieu of flowers, it has been requested that any memorial contributions be made to the First Baptist Church, Kingsport, the Rotary Club of Kingsport Foundation, or a worthy charity of your choice.
