Catherine Calkin (Cathy) Kelly was born in Old Hickory, Tennessee on November 9, 1935. Cathy died early Thursday morning, June 14, 2012 at her home after a 10 year battle with cancer. Her favorite pastimes included tending her beautiful flower gardens, hiking on Roan Mountain and knitting/crocheting presents for her friends. She especially enjoyed meeting with her friends in the Sullivan County Republican Women’s Club. While raising her children, she spent many hours working in the clinics of Miller-Perry, Central and South schools, where she met and retained many lifelong friends. Cathy was a member of the Colonial Heights Presbyterian Church. She was preceded in death by her parents, several aunts and uncles, and a cousin. She is survived by her husband William C. (Bill) Kelly of the home in Kingsport, Colleen Kelly of Jonesborough, William K. (Bill) Kelly of Gonzales, Louisiana, grandson Clancey Kelly, and sister Caroline Calkin Welkom of Buffalo Grove, Illinois. In addition, she “adopted” many of her children’s friends and treated them as her own. Her love and generosity touched everyone she encountered.
