
Mrs. Long was born on September 16, 1922 in Appalachia, VA, the daughter of O.M. and Ruth Graybeal Kern. She was a loving and devoted wife, mother and grandmother and was a member of the Colonial Heights United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Mr. Joe E. Long on August 11, 1989. She was also preceded in death by her step-mother, Mrs. Bonnie Walker Kern and her sisters Helen K. Jeter, Bonnie K. Miller and Flo K. Hood. Mrs. Long was a long-time resident of Sullivan Gardens where she was active in Glen Alpine United Methodist Church; she sang in the choir and was active in church and school organizations and later in Colonial Heights and at Colonial Heights United Methodist Church. While in Colonial Heights, Evelyn worked for the Meals on Wheels. In later years, Evelyn moved to Remington House Assisted Living, where she made many friends and spent her time reading. She gave candy to other residents on their birthdays and shared and swapped books with anyone who shared her love of reading. The family is deeply thankful for the staff of the Remington House. “Mother loved it there and loved each person who made her days joyful.”
Survivors include her brother Ross (Jean) Kern of Cleveland, TN, her children Tom (Diane) Long of Memphis, TN, Joe (Elizabeth) Long of Santa Fe, NM, Kathy (Bill) Garner of Lake City, SC., seven grandchildren: Bill Garner, John Garner, Drew Long, Whitney Long Neal, Parker Long, Maeve Long, Fintan Long, Two great-grandchildren; Lauren and Christian Garner, and a special niece, Sandy Tolliver of Kingsport, who was more like her daughter.
Funeral services for Mrs. Long will be conducted on Tuesday January 22, 2013 at 2 p.m. from the Colonial Heights United Methodist Church with Rev. Robert Burlingham and Rev. Henry Lenoir officiating. Burial will follow in the East Lawn Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday from 1 p.m. until the funeral hour at the church.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests the memorial contributions be made to the Colonial Heights United Methodist Church Memorial Fund.
