

Hayter C. Brown, Jr., age 79, Johnson City, passed away peacefully at 4:23 AM Wednesday, December 20, 2006, at North Side Hospital. He was born in Meadowview, VA, on March 25, 1927, was a son of the late Hayter C. and Gladys Ritchie Brown, he had resided in Johnson City since 1981 moving from Blountville, TN. He retired from Mason Dixon Tank Lines in 1987 following 40 years of service. He was also a member of the Teamster Local #549. In 1958, while with Mason Dixon, he was the first American Trucking Association National Driving Champion. Mr. Brown was a veteran of World War II having served in the US Army in Germany. He was a member of Munsey Memorial United Methodist Church and the Solon Gentry Sunday School Class. Mr. Brown was a member and past master of the Johnson City Masonic Lodge #486, member and past patron of Chapter #194, Order of Eastern Star of Johnson City, member of the York Rite Bodies, Scottish Rite Bodies, Jericho Shriners, and numerous other Masonic bodies. Mr. Brown was a proud husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, mason, veteran, and friend who loved the opportunity to talk about anything. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Reba Johnson Brown; brother, Charles Luther Brown; two sisters, Mary Louise Baker and Frances Brown Wolford. Survivors include his wife of 26 years, Virginia Moore Brown, of the home; three daughters, Vicki Lynn Martin and husband, Bruce, Piney Flats, Mary Frances Dalton, and husband David, Kingsport, Lana L. Moore, Johnson City; two sons, Hayter C. “Buddy” Brown, III, Blountville, and his fiancé, Rhonda Smith Hawn, Kingsport, and Joseph G. “Joe” Brown, Blountville; brother, the Honorable David D. Brown, and wife Nancy, Abingdon, VA; seven grandchildren, 1 great-granddaughter, several nieces and nephews; and numerous special friends. The funeral service for Mr. Brown will be conducted Friday (December 22, 2006) at 12:00 noon in the East Chapel of Appalachian Funeral Home with Rev. Douglas Grove-de Jarnett officiating. Interment will follow in Mountain Home National Cemetery. Military flag honors will be accorded by the Charles DeWitt Kingsport VFW Post #3382. Active pallbearers who are asked to meet at the funeral home by 11:45 AM Friday will be Josh Brown, Jason Brown, Zachary Dalton, Jordan Brown, Brittany Barnett and husband, Jonathan, Joe Brown and Mickey Brown. Honorary pallbearers will be Dale Range, Vince Williams, J.N. Buckles, Greg Powers, Patrick “Pat” Story, Vernon DuBois, Gary Davis, Ron Campbell, Tony Duncan, Bud Sell and Denny Friday. The family will receive friends Friday from 9:30 until 11:30 AM. For those who prefer memorials may be given to the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude’s Place, Memphis, TN, 38105.
