

Alvin Lynn Slayton, age 65, of Lascassas, Tennessee, formerly of Columbus, Mississippi, passed away November 3, 2011, at Alive Hospice, Nashville. He was born in Moulton, Alabama, on November 22, 1945, and moved to Columbus at an early age. He graduated S.D. Lee High School in 1964 and received his Bachelor of Science Degree from Mississippi State University in Electrical Engineering in 1969. Lynn accepted a commission as 2nd Lieutenant with the United States Air Force and was raised to the rank of 1st Lieutenant. He served at several stations including Stewart Field in New York. After his career in the Air Force, Lynn returned to Columbus and was employed as an electrical engineer by American Bosch (later United Technologies) and helped developed several automotive components. He retired from United Technologies with over 25 years of service. Lynn returned to Mississippi State University and received his Masters Degree in Business Administration with an emphasis in Human Resource Management in December 1994. In 2006, he relocated to Murfreesboro, TN, serving as Vice President of Product Engineering with Emerson Heating Products until his retirement last year. Lynn was a member of Belle Aire Baptist Church in Murfreesboro, TN, and a former member of Fairview Baptist Church in Columbus, MS. He served as a Sunday school teacher, Chairman of the Deacons, a member of the worship choir, and many other committees and mission ministries. Lynn was a Godly man whose faith touched numerous people. His life was a living testimony to God’s grace. He was a licensed pilot, an avid fan of Mississippi State football, and was an accomplished woodworker. Preceded in death by parents, William Clyde Slayton and Docia Bea Wilkerson Slayton. He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Marilyn Weathers Slayton. Daughter and Son-in-law: Mary Lynn and Jeff Berry-Knoxville, TN. Son and Daughter-in-law: Jon and Angela Slayton- Baton Rouge, LA. Grandchildren: Lauren, Jacob, and Caroline Berry and Anna, David, James, Abby, Joshua, and Emily Slayton. Brothers: John (Buddy), Charles, Wayne, and Wilson (Buster) Slayton. Sister: Carolyn Bowling. Aunts: Lucille Folkert, Allene Littrell. Several nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends Saturday, November 5, 2011, from 2-4 PM with a celebration of life service to follow at 4 pm at Belle Aire Baptist Church in Murfreesboro. Rev. Dean Sisk and Rev. Adam Davis officiating and Monday, 12 noon, November 7, 2011, at Fairview Baptist Church, Columbus, MS. Rev. Sammy Crawford, Dr. Gene Henderson and Rev. Mickey Dalrymple officiating. The family will receive friends from 10am-12pm prior to the service. Pallbearers will be deacons from the respective churches. Interment will follow at Memorial Gardens of Columbus, Columbus, Mississippi. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the Vacation Bible School funds at Belle Aire Baptist Church, 1307 N.
