Bertha Lees

Lees, Bertha Huber, age 93, of Knoxville, Tennessee passed away peacefully on Sunday, November 9, 2014 at U.T. Medical Center following a short illness. Bertha was preceded in death by her parents Joseph Huber and Mary Reese Huber, five brothers: William, Frank, Joseph, Fred, and Henry Huber, three sisters: Gertie Behanan, Dorothy Ficco, Betty Huber, a daughter: Cathy Sue Lees and stepson James Lees, Jr. She is survived by her husband of sixty-seven years, James R. Lees, Sr. and four children: Cheryl Lees-Haley (Paul), Barbara Winston (Larry), Marilyn Wohl (Barry), Glenn Lees (Sonja), seven grandchildren: Andrea Winston, Robyn Winston Tomioka (Koh), Savannah Lees-Haley (Chris Dunn), Daniel Wohl, Adam Wohl, Katy Lees, Gregg Lees (Adrienne), four great-grandchildren: Maya Tomioka, Lulu Tomioka, Stanley McDaniel, James Lees.

Bertha graduated from Donora High School in Donora, Pennsylvania in 1938. She was one of the first women enlisted in the Women’s Navy and served for five years during W.W. II. Bertha was an active member of Church Street United Methodist Church since 1958 where she was involved with the women’s circle and many more church activities. Other activities include numerous volunteer hours with U.T. Medical Center Auxiliary, and past-president of South High School P.T.A. Her home was always a gathering spot for her family, a welcome center for the neighborhood and beyond. Her strength of character and warm, generous spirit will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

A Celebration of Life service will take place at 4:00 P.M. on Wednesday, November 12, 2014 at Church Street United Methodist Church Kaye Family Life Center, 900 Henley Street, Knoxville, TN, Rev. Andy Ferguson officiating. Visitation with family will follow the service. A private interment will follow on Thursday, November 13 at 10:00 A.M. at Woodlawn Cemetery in Knoxville.
