

Carrie Marie Lay, age 93 of Knoxville, passed away October 5, 2022. She was a devoted, loyal, and loving wife, mother, grandmother, and friend. She was a member of Wallace Memorial Baptist Church. She was a registered nurse and worked for Fort Sanders in the Newborn Nursery for almost forty years. In her free time she worked in the self-service car wash business that she ran with the love of her life, Elbert Lay, Jr. The two were married for over sixty-five years and never stopped holding hands. She loved the Lord with all of her heart and this was shown through her words and actions She treated everyone she knew with love, kindness, and respect. She was loved by everyone. Preceded in death by her parents, Carl Glenn Green and Sallie Mae Scalf; husband and life partner Elbert Lay, Jr., brothers Dayton and Loy; sister, Ella; and grandchildren Matthew Lay and Jonathan Lay. Marie is survived by her loving and devoted sons, Douglas Lay, Steven Lay and wife Sonya Lay; grandchildren, Lindsay Lay Grove and husband Isaac, and Stephanie Lay; great-grandchildren, Garren Phillips, Gage Grove, Ava Grove, and Donavon Wheeler; nieces, Carlene Johnson, Rose Manley, and Doris Campbell; and nephew Ned Campbell. Family will receive friends Friday, October 14, 2022, from 11:00 am- 12:00pm at Sherwood Memorial Gardens with the service to follow at 12:00 pm.
