Mom decided Chris needed some time out...in the woods, so we headed to Sterling Forest, NC (one of the few virgin forest tracts in the country) for a 3 day backpack trip on the Appalachian Trail. We parked the car, left our route in the station box and headed out...not long after, we heard horses approaching, it was the Park Rangers. They warned us that we would likely see a bear on the trail. Not to worry, they said, she was not too big maybe 150 pounds; "she might stick her head in the tent and smell your feet. Hang your food well", and off they rode. It was dark by the time we reached our 1st Camp site, but we managed to get set up, dinner on the sterno and to bed...Day two we hiked along the top of the ridge where we picked blackberries and thought a bear would be quite happy here...we made camp site 2 at dusk. We were setting up camp, mom in our tent, Chris working on his, and me in charge of the kitchen...Suddenly everything was very still, I looked up and mom was frozen in the tent door, eyes bulging...I turned around slowly and there was the bear, on her hind legs stretched to her full height, seeming much larger than 150 pounds and over 6 feet tall...mom started clapping her hands and yelling "shoo, bear..Shoo!" Luckily the bear was bored and walk away. The next morning, Chris told us how he had awakened in the middle of the night thinking he had gone blind because it was so dark he could not see his hand in front of his face...The bear, when we left camp, was sunning herself on a rock by the creek. Later that afternoon, we walked out of the forest, entertaining each other with our experiences during the hike. About 100 yards from the car the sky opened up and sent down torrents of rain. We dashed over and threw ourselves into the dry car, looking forward to home and hot showers and warm beds...laughing ourselves silly when it dawned on us all at the same moment, that it had poured rain over most of our 72 hour trek. One of my dearest memories.

Some Childhood Stories:
The Tool Kit:
Christopher had received for his birthday or Christmas a wooden handled, plastic carpentry set and was playing in the playpen when suddenly and unprovoked, he smashed me in the head with the wooden handle of the hammer. He had the hammer and used ME as the nail!

The Great Escape:
Mom used to relate this story. Once, not long after moving to Knoxville, Christopher wandered away from home…He could not have been much more than 3 or 4 years old. We were living with our grandparents who had a mamma and baby dog who were in the Border collie breed. Mom must have been frantic when she realized Chris was go, she says she finally got a knock on the door and the people told her they thought her baby was at the end of the block with two dogs who would not let anyone near the kids to bring him home. Sure enough, mom went down the hill and there were Pip and Pepper corralling the baby as their herding instincts required them to do.

The First Day of School:
Christopher came running down the street, tears streaming from his face. Weeping uncontrollably. We asked what had happened as we tried to calm him. He said, the girls, the girls they were all kissing me!!! Years later on Ladies night at the roller rink the lady at the ticket booth decided Chris was so cute, she would let him in on the ladies price as well…

The Paper Route:
Mark was taking Chris out to help on the route – driving the car at the age of 12...Upon arriving at a home with an aggressive dog, Mark warned Chris to be on the lookout for it. As Chris neared the door,Mark heard a rustle and yelled, “Chris, look out”. In a flash the dog was on him, Chris turned and punched it in the face. Paper delivered…
