

ROY, EUGENE (GENE) FREDERICK – of Knoxville, died June 18, 2012. A native of Indiana, Mr. Roy was the son of the late Frederick and Clara Roy. He was predeceased by his first wife, Margaret; as well as two children, Victoria and Kenneth; and a grandson, Craig. He is survived by his wife of 29 years, Judith; sons Kelly Roy (Jo) and Douglas Roy (Diane); daughter Janet Childs (Richard); two stepchildren, Cynthia Gentry Foster (Clark), and David Gentry (Anna); sister Adeline Hosford; niece Carole Hosford; and brother-in-law Steve Yunker. He also leaves eight grandchildren: Amanda, Jessica, Stephanie, Brandon, Megan, David, Melissa, and Michael; and great-grandchild Candice. Mr. Roy began his employment with Union Carbide Nuclear Division in 1947 at the Oak Ride Gaseous Diffusion Plant (K-25), later transferring to O.R. National Laboratory in 1962. He retired in 1982. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and served in WWII, including time spent as part of the Special Engineering Detachment in Oak Ridge. He was electrical engineering graduate of Prudue University. In his earlier years Gene was a very active bowler and duplicate bridge player. He became a Life Master of the American Contract Bridge League in 1954 and went on to become a tournament director with the ACBL. This avocation began while he worked as an engineer and continued full-time after his retirement from ORNL. In 2001 he retired from tournament directing and he and Judy enjoyed many years of “the good life”, traveling to some wonderful places together.
