Fred Bedelle, Jr. was born in Woodstock, Georgia, to Era Mae and Fred Bedelle, Sr. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Frieda Bedelle Brown. He is survived by his beloved wife of 70 years, Norma; daughter Donna Folkner (John); son-in-law Jeff Brown; grandchildren Andrew Folkner (Jamie), Kathryn Odom (Jonathan), Aubrey Brown, and Mack Brown; and great-grandchildren Henry Folkner, Benjamin Folkner, and Leah Odom.
Dr. Bedelle lived an incredibly full and accomplished life. A proud veteran, Dr. Bedelle served in the 101st Airborne in the Korean Conflict. He was a lifelong educator and mentor, dedicating over 50 years to public education. He first retired as the final superintendent of Knoxville City Schools. His passion for education continued as he began a second career training future teachers at Lincoln Memorial University, ultimately retiring as Dean Emeritus of the Carter and Moyer College of Education. He believed deeply in the value of public education and the power of opportunity it provides. For him, teaching went far beyond the classroom. He taught life lessons through example and saw every moment as an opportunity to learn and grow. A lifelong learner himself, retirement simply opened doors to new passions—woodworking, beekeeping, flats fishing, writing, and more.
His role as a father brought him immense joy, and he was a devoted and enthusiastic grandfather. Whether in the stands at a game or on the sidelines of a band performance, he was a constant and supportive presence, no matter the weather or location. He brought a spirit of fun and learning to every adventure and wherever he saw a chance to make life better for others, he took it.
His legacy is one of love, learning, service, and unwavering support for those he held dear.
