A life-long resident of East TN, Gary was the last child born in the log cabin built by his great grandfather in the late 1770’s.
He was a graduate of ETSU High School, and matriculated with a BS degree from ETSU as well.
Gary, a long time public school teacher during the ‘70’s, 80’s, and 90’s, was popular with his students and colleagues alike, and was fondly known as “Mr. B”. He was an outspoken advocate for education, students rights and social justice. He was also president of an organization that was active in the prevention of child abuse and youth suicide.
An avid admirer of all the arts, Gary especially enjoyed theatre, music, playing the piano, and the camaraderie of good friends. A great source of joy to Gary throughout his life were his many canine companions, on whom he doted. His friends and colleagues remember Gary for his cleverness, his quick wit, and as a colorful, legendary raconteur.
In addition to his lighthearted approach to the good things in life, Gary had a serious and philosophical side, with a profound interest in the medical arts and patient advocacy. He was especially proud of his Physicians Assistant certification presented by The American Association of Physicians Assistants, and served for several years as a physicians assistant.
Preceded in death by his mother Lorna Ruth Carter of Jonesborough TN, father Joseph Emory Berthiaume, an infant brother Johnny Berthiaume, brother Roger Hartman, and maternal grandparents, Cecil and Eula Hartman.
He is survived by a sister Gail Fleenor and husband Don of Bristol VA, a nephew Dustin, three nieces, Nickie, Marcia, and Shanna, and their mother, Beverly White, a caring friend.
A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, June 26, 2019, at 6:00 p.m. at Berry Highland Funeral Home, Knoxville, TN.
A graveside service will be held on a later date at Sulphur Springs Cemetery in Jonesborough, TN.
