Born June 8, 1943, in Florence, Alabama, Gerry was the daughter of Ralph and Pearl Hatcher. She spent much of her early and late life in Tennessee, graduating from Young High School in Knoxville and later attending Carson-Newman College. Gerry and her loving husband of 62 years, Wayne, also lived in Dale City, Virginia for 35 years. Her life was marked by a deep commitment to faith, family, and creativity.
A devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, Gerry is lovingly remembered by her husband, M. Wayne Barrett; her children: Marshall W. Barrett and his wife Gina; Melinda (Mendy) Pierce and her husband Lee; and Michael Barrett and his wife Rhonda. She was a proud grandmother to Amanda Pierce Brittain (and her husband Bradley), Rebekah Pierce, Esther Pierce, Carrie Barrett, and Evelyn Barrett. Her joy extended to the next generation with the birth of her great-grandson, Wren Brittain as well as additional great-grandsons expected in May of 2026, Asher and Hayden Brittain.
Gerry's life was deeply rooted in her Christian faith. She was a faithful member of Mount Olive Baptist Church in Knoxville and previously worshipped at Riverview Baptist Church in Woodbridge, Virginia, and Dale City Baptist Church in Dale City, Virginia. Over the years she served her church communities with dedication—teaching Sunday School and leading children’s ministries such as the Children's Choir, Girls in Action (GAs), and Vacation Bible School.
Gerry had a passion for crafts that brought beauty into the lives of many. Her talents included sewing, embroidery, and ceramics—skills she used not only for personal enjoyment but also to create cherished gifts for loved ones.
Her legacy is one of love expressed through service—whether nurturing young hearts in church classrooms or stitching warmth into every handmade creation. Gerry's presence will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
May her memory bring comfort to those who knew and loved her.
