Born on July 20, 1918, Glenwood grew up during the Great Depression and went on to live through more than a century of history. He married Mary Byrnes, and together they shared 73 years of marriage and raised five sons.
When World War II came, Glenwood was drafted into the United States Navy. At that time, he was already married and the father of four young boys. He served aboard the LST-820 as a gunner captain. The ship ran aground during Typhoon Ida in the Pacific, where he stayed on the ship until they could be rescued by the Navy several months later when the war was ending. In his later years, Glenwood enjoyed a simple, steady routine. He loved gospel music, and often played his guitar and harmonica at the same time, sometimes singing along. Nearly every day, he rode his scooter to Publix or Wendy’s, and one of his favorite pastimes was feeding the ducks at the pond behind Publix. He really enjoyed good food, and he ate hot sauce everyday.
He also liked keeping up with the news, especially Fox News, and checking the weather on the local stations. Even with macular degeneration, he stayed independent, using his iPad and Siri on his iPhone to keep in touch with family.
At last count, Glenwood’s family had grown to 84 descendants: 16 grandchildren, 35 great- grandchildren, and 28 great-great-grandchildren. His life was long and full, and he will be remembered most for the love he had for his family, and the faith in God that carried him through everyday.
Glenwood is survived by two of his sons, Richard and William, along with his many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Mary, and by three sons, Glen, Roger, and Dennis.
Services will be held privately with arrangements at Berry Highland Memorial Cemetery in Knoxville, Tennessee
