Harold Vick came to OAC on July 26, 2017. From that moment forward, he began living his best life. He found a whole new world filled with unlimited food, friendship, care, love, safety and of course, an endless number of his favorite thing - strings. Harold had much to learn when he first moved here but staff worked diligently and patiently with him to teach him a daily routine to include personal care, wearing clothes and particularly, accepting and wearing shoes. As much as Harold learned from us, we learned even more from him. He was a tough and determined young man whose strong will was a challenge for everyone who worked with him but he was an easy person to love and people who knew him quickly became fiercely loyal to Harold and always advocated in his best interest.
Harold kept everyone on their toes! Even if you didn’t realize it, he was always aware of his environment. You could watch him giving the “side eye” to see if anyone was paying attention to him while looking for his next opportunity to grab an extra glass of milk, an appealing food item or a visible string on someone’s hoodie. And boy, was he fast! Once staff realized what he was up to, he would simply smile and start searching for his next opportunity. Most of all, Harold gave the best hugs.
As suggested by Jenni Lee – let’s all toast with a shot of milk to remember having Harold in our lives. He will be missed by all who knew him. Cheers, Harold!
