

James Gartman Baldwin, born on May 18, 1937, in White Top, Virginia, passed away on January 10, 2026, at the age of 88. A resident of Knoxville, Tennessee, Gartman was known for his kind and generous spirit.
In his early years, Gartman moved to Mayland, Tennessee, at the age of seven, and then to Knoxville when he was eight. He attended Bearden and Young High School, where he began to lay the foundation for a life characterized by hard work and dedication.
Gartman was a self-taught mechanic, earning respect throughout Knoxville for his exceptional work ethic while working at several filling stations. His career was marked by a commitment to excellence and a dedication to his craft.
In 1956, he married Peggy DeBord, whom he met at Marble City Baptist Church. Together, they raised a family until Peggy's passing in 1977. In 1979, Gartman found love again and remarried Linda Johnson. The couple shared a love for camping and cherished spending time with their families.
Gartman had a passion for fishing, hunting, and camping, activities that brought him joy and relaxation. His personal qualities of having a huge heart and willingness to help anyone in need left a lasting legacy of kindness and generosity.
Gartman is preceded in death by his wives, Peggy and Linda; parents, Fred and Bonnie Baldwin; granddaughter, Stephanie Vickers and grandson, James Baldwin II. He is survived by his children, Cathy Joiner, Mike Baldwin (Leann); grandchildren, Suzanne Joiner and Jessica Baldwin; five great grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews, brother, Robert Baldwin (Sue).
Family and friends are invited to gather for a receiving on Thursday, January 15, 2026, at Berry Highland Memorial Funeral Home from 5 to 7 p.m., followed by a funeral service, Pastor Tom Miller officiating. A graveside service will be held at Berry Highland Memorial Cemetery on Friday, January 16, 2026, at 1 p.m.
