Jim was born and raised in Knoxville, and eventually moved back to the home and wonderful neighborhood he grew up in. His commitment to family and community was evident in every aspect of his life.
He worked in the pest control industry for years, eventually owning his own business but was never too busy to help a friend, say hi to neighbor, or meet a stranger. He greeted you with that bright smile and those big arms to give you a huge hug! Jim had a remarkable talent for making everyone around him feel valued and loved.
Jim loved sports. Baseball was his passion; a player as a child, an umpire for 35 years as an adult and maintaining the Bawer fields where he spent much of his childhood. He also spent time coaching and refereeing youth basketball. He was always up for a round of golf or watching his beloved UT sports teams. He was a VOL fan through and through. It was rare to not see Jim in orange - even on his wedding day.
He and his beloved wife, Kathy cherished their time together, hanging around Knoxville with their friends, traveling to Florida for vacation and especially at their lake house in Waupaca, Wisconsin.
A loyal friend and neighbor, Jim will be remembered fondly for his generosity, infectious laugh, genuine kindness and ability to brighten anyone’s day.
Jim is preceded in death by his parents, Howell (Ham) and Frances Marshall; brother, Jan Allen; sister, Pamela Yvonne Marshall.
Jim leaves behind many friends, relatives, and his loving and dedicated wife, Kathy, who will miss him immensely.
The family would like to express their gratitude to the entire staff at Emory University Liver Transplant Program in Atlanta, GA for giving us more time with Jim, and the staff at Emory Ridge Memory Care of Powell, TN and UT Hospice for caring for Jim as if he were family.
