Lonnie “Lon” Edward Brock, age 76, unexpectedly passed this life at their Knoxville home on November 4, 2021, to claim his many, well-deserved heavenly rewards. Lonnie was always selfless, operating behind the scenes, gently mentoring, loving, and serving those around him. Known for his kindness, integrity, strong work ethic, humility, wisdom, quiet faith, and constant sense of humor, Lonnie leaves behind a legacy worth honoring. A life-long athlete, lover of the outdoors, and a true Western cowboy at heart, Lonnie loved Texas and spent many months of the year at their Dallas home, but he loved nothing more than his family. Lonnie is preceded in death by his parents, John H. Brock and Dora Hartman Brock, and his brother Melvin H. Brock. He leaves behind his high school sweetheart, soulmate, best friend and wife of 54 years, Judy Mantooth Brock; his two beloved children: Jennifer Brock Callais (and dear son-in-law, Jarrett), of Knoxville; and, John Andrew “Andy” Brock, of Frisco, TX; and his three grandchildren: Hank Michael Callais, Eliza Leigh Callais, and Amity Briana Callais, who were the joys of his heart and upon whom the sun rose and set.
Lonnie was an honor graduate of the University of Tennessee with a bachelor’s degree in Engineering Physics, and a master’s degree in Physics. He was a member of Sigma Pi Sigma honorary physics society, an adjunct professor of mathematics at Roane State, and Pellissippi State Community College.
Lonnie started his career at Goodyear Atomic in Ohio, followed by Robert-Shaw in Knoxville, and then a cross-country move to Huntington Beach, California, where he worked at McDonald-Douglas Research Lab. Upon returning to Tennessee, he worked for decades at Tennessee Valley Authority across multiple nuclear sites and finished his career with the U.S. Department of Energy. He spent many years running his own nuclear consulting firm and retired earlier this year. Yet regardless of his success, whenever asked about his profession, Lonnie would simply say he was “an engineer.”
The family will receive friends at Weaver Funeral Home, 5815 Western Avenue in Knoxville, on Monday, November 8, 2021, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. A graveside service is scheduled for Tuesday, November 9, 2021, at 1 pm at Oak Ridge Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Holston Home for Children in Greeneville, TN. Condolences are welcome at weaverfuneralservices.com.
