A devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, Ray was a man of deep faith, patriotism, and good humor. He was a founding member of Chilhowee Hills Baptist Church (formerly McCalla Avenue Baptist Church), where he served faithfully for many years and formed lifelong friendships.
Ray proudly served in the U.S. Navy during World War II in the Pacific Theatre. He was one of five brothers who served their country during the war. After returning home, he spent more than 60 years in the insurance business—a natural salesman. Known for his unfailing positivity, Ray was a steady presence of encouragement and friend to all.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Mary Louise Roach Hodges. Together, they built a life centered on love, faith, and family. He was also preceded in death by his second wife, Carolyn Owen Hodges, with whom he shared a time of companionship and care. He was also the last surviving of seven siblings—a remarkable generation of strength and resilience.
Ray is survived by his sons, David (Lee Ann) Hodges and Randy (Julie) Hodges; grandchildren, Ryan Hodges, Thomas (Janea) Hodges, and Ashley (Chris) Sexton; cherished great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
During a time that was both emotional and challenging, dedicated caregivers, granddaughter Ashley and family friend April Root brought great comfort and peace of mind. Their kindness, patience, and attentiveness made a meaningful difference in Ray's life and to the family.
Family and friends will gather for a 10:00 AM graveside service at East Tennessee State Veterans Cemetery, 220 East Governor John Sevier Hwy, Knoxville, TN 37920, on Wednesday, July 23, 2025, officiated by Rev. Thomas Hodges and Rev. David Collins.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Chilhowee Hills Baptist Church, 4615 Asheville Hwy, Knoxville, TN 37914 or North Knoxville Baptist Church, 217 W Oldham Ave, Knoxville, TN 37917.
