Shirley Jean Brooks

Shirley Jean Brooks, age 90, passed away June 7, 2022 at Westmoreland Health and Rehabilitation Center, Knoxville, Tennessee. Daughter of the late Glenn and Esther Brooks, Shirley was born in Detroit, Michigan on September 7, 1931, but was raised in Hot Springs, North Carolina, at the foothills of the Appalachia Mountains. After graduating from Appalachian State University in Boone, North Carolina, she became a librarian at Salisbury High School, in Salisbury North Carolina, where she worked until her retirement.

Shirley had a number of interests and hobbies. She enjoyed playing bridge with her Bridge Club, spending time with her friends in Hot Springs, traveling across the United States and abroad, shopping (especially for shoes), putting together jigsaw puzzles and watching her favorite sport teams, the North Carolina Tar Heels and the Atlanta Braves. She was a great cook and loved to host the annual family picnic in her beloved mountains. Shirley was of the Methodist faith.

Shirley was predeceased by her parents, brother, Glenn Brooks and his wife Billie Harmon Brooks, loving aunt, Lita B. Newman (Husband Edward) and her steadfast and caring friend, Carolyn A Murray.

She is survived by her four nieces, Mary Catherine Williams (late husband Wesley), Margie Bowman (husband James), Glenna Petress ( husband James), and Sherry Watt (husband Mark). Several great nieces and nephews and even several great-great nieces and nephews. A cousin, Glenn G. Steppe (wife Nancy), Uncle Doyle Cody ( wife Judy) and special friend Alex Pate.

A heartfelt thanks to the caregivers at Carillon Assisted Living of Salisbury, Morning Pointe Powell Assisted Living and Westmoreland Health and Rehabilitation Center, for their loving care of Shirley during her time there.

A Memorial Service celebrating Shirley's life will be held in Hot Springs, North Carolina at Fairview United Methodist Church on Saturday, September 3rd at 1:30 P.M.
