He was a member of First Baptist Church of Concord and proudly served his country as a veteran of the United States Air Force. Vernon had a deep love for UT sports, especially football, and enjoyed spending time golfing, visiting flea markets, and relaxing at the beach, particularly Myrtle Beach. Above all, he cherished time with his family, especially his grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his father, Wade J. Hampton; his mother, Cleo Belle Huskins Hampton; and his sister, Anna Sue Bradford.
Vernon is survived by his beloved wife, Karen L. Hampton; daughters, Deborah H. Jackson (Todd), Pamela K. Hudson and Beth A. Penn (Shane); five grandchildren, Tucker S. Jackson (Kari), Maggie K. Slaton (Darek), Ashley L. Giffin (Elliott), Kelli A. Hudson (Garrison), and Jackson C. Penn (Rachel); two great-grandchildren, Maddox H. Slaton and Lillie Ann Giffin; nephew, Kevin E. Bradford (Tanya).
Receiving of family and friends will be held at Berry Highland West Funeral Home on Saturday, May 2, 2026, from 12:30 pm to 2:30 pm. A Graveside Service will follow at Berry Highland Memorial Cemetery, 5315 Kingston Pike, Knoxville, TN 37919at 3:00 pm.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
