Elmer Eugene Lewis passed away on Tuesday, June 6, 2023 at home. He was born on December 9, 1929. Elmer is survived by his wife of 69 years, Fern, and four children: a daughter, Patricia Horton (Jerry), and three sons, Richard (Christine), Robert and Larry. He is also survived by six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Elmer is a U.S. Army combat veteran who served in the Korean War. He is a patriot who loved his country and was proud of his military service. He was a member of the American Legion.
Elmer retired from General Motors (Delco) in 1985 after 32 years.
He was an accomplished and avid bowler in Kokomo’s bowling “hey day”. In 1966, Elmer and his Kokomo Eagles Lodge teammates (whom he referred to as his brothers) won an international bowling tournament in Ft. Wayne. (The large trophy was displayed in the Kokomo Eagles Lodge for many years.) He enjoyed working in his garage on “fix it” projects and watching sports of every kind on television.
Elmer was the No. 1 fan of the rock band “Papa Roach”; and enjoyed a personal connection to the band members. He will be missed by his family, who are grateful for his long, healthy and independent life.
The family would like to extend a special Thanks to Compassus Hospice and their staff, Pedra, Rhonda and Megan for their amazing support in Elmer’s closing weeks and days.
A graveside service at Kokomo’s Crown Point Cemetary will take place on Saturday, June 10th at 11:00am with full military rites performed by the United States Army and the VFW Post 1152 Military Rites Team. A Celebration of Life will be scheduled at a later date with notification provided. Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.ellersmortuarywebster.com for the Lewis family.
