Elton “Chip” Floyd Holder, 96, of Kokomo, Indiana passed away July 26, 2023. He was born on June 28, 1927 in Alex, Oklahoma the son of Floyd Holder and Bessie Holder (Walker). He married Virginia Rae Holder (Avery) on April 13, 1950, and they were blessed with 73 wonderful years together.
Chip graduated from Gan’s High School and enlisted in the United States Army in 1946. He was called back to service in 1950 and was stationed in Korea as a Sergeant of the 5th Armored Division. Chip and Virginia welcomed their first child on base at Camp Chaffee, Arkansas shortly before returning to their extended families in Kokomo, Indiana.
Chip retired from Holder Mattress, which was founded in 1947 by two of his older brothers. He loved going to work at the family business, with his wife, and made many of the box springs that were sold in their Kokomo location. Chip was a devoted Christian who attended St. Luke’s United Methodist Church (The ConneXion Church). He was a member of the Builder’s Sunday School Class, made noodles for numerous church dinners, and was a beloved greeter and usher on Sundays. Even when he was no longer able to get to church, he remained faithful to his daily prayers and stayed involved with his church family.
Chip was a protector, provider, and confidante for his family, and they will dearly miss hearing his jokes and advice. He was always there to support with a hug, a hand squeeze, or a prayer.
Chip’s memory will live on through his loving son, David (Gloria) Holder; grandchildren Brian Cain, Bret Cain, Brittany Cain, Amber (Chad) Myers, and Michael Holder; and great-grandchildren Courtney Cain, Hayden Myers, and Jacob Myers. He was preceded in death by his cherished daughter Cheryl Cain, his parents, and his siblings.
