Esther L. Wilkins, born April 21, 1919, in Fort Wayne, Indiana, passed away to be with the Lord on May 29, 2019. She had just celebrated her 100th birthday the month before. She was born to J. Stanley and Anna M. (Salsbery) Kendall. Esther married W. Kenneth Avery Sept. 21, 1962. He passed February 21, 1963. She then married John B. Wilkins Sept. 9, 1967, and he preceded her in death June 11, 1995.
Since then, Esther was full of life and lived independently until she fell at the age of 93 and was found by her mailman three days later. She loved to share the newspaper article about this event to those who came to visit.
She has four surviving sisters, Annette Kiphart, Virginia Way, Eldine Rehn, and Geraldine Cousineau. She also has several extended family members. She has watched many family members and loved ones leave this earth to be with Jesus in her 100 years. Both of her parents and two brothers, Kenneth and Russell, and three sisters, Mildred, Dorothy and Pauline, have gone home to be with the Lord.
Esther graduated with the class of 1937 and later from the Bible College in Waukesha, Wisconsin. She then came to Kokomo in 1959. Esther was a member of Kokomo First Church of the Nazarene, Joy Fellowship, and the Kokomo Senior Citizen Center. She loved to read her Bible and play bingo. She loved her “family” at Five Star Residences, including her special friends, Davida, Jim, Bev, Ruth, Micki and Terri. She loved the dog Sammie that visited her weekly, at least.
A funeral service for Esther will take place at Ellers Mortuary Webster Street Chapel on Monday, June 3, 2019, at 1 p.m., with Pastor Dave Osbourne officiating. There will be a two-hour visitation prior from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Burial will follow at Albright Cemetery, with a procession.
Memorial contributions can be made to the activities center at Five Star Residences.
