

Gene P. Plummer, 85, died at 8:58 p.m., Tuesday, June 21, 2011, at St. Joseph Hospital. He was born December 9, 1925, in Elwood, to Herbert and Nina (VanHorn) Plummer. On July 24, 1964, in Warsaw, he married Mary Prifogle. She preceded him in death on August 25, 2005.
He served in the United States Navy, Pacific Fleet, during World War II. In 1948, he became a member of the American Legion Post 6 Color Guard, a group of twelve World War II veterans specializing in precision close-order drill and other intricate maneuvers. The group achieved national honors in Philadelphia in 1949, winning first place. In January 1956, he was appointed to serve as a Deputy Sheriff under Tex Scott, a position he held until June 1966. He was employed at Chrysler Corporation for 23 years, retiring in 1991. His enjoyment was lawn and shrub care, watching sports on TV and reading World War II history. He attended Crossroads Community Church.
He is survived by a daughter, Margo (Steven) Williams; two step-children, Judith (Robert) Camden, and Kenneth (Patricia) Prifogle, all of Kokomo; granddaughter, Meridith M. Williams; step-grandchildren, Dusty Wade, Alisha Myers, Sara Vazquez, Lora Vazquez, and Carey Kemper; nephew, Steve Plummer; niece, Ellen Slabaugh; eight step-great-grandchildren; and one step-great-great-grandchild.
In addition to his wife, Mary Plummer, he was preceded in death by his parents and an older brother.
Services will be 12 p.m. Saturday at Sunset Memory Garden Funeral Home with Pastor Jeff Harlow officiating. Entombment will follow in Sunset Memory Garden Cemetery.
