

Joel James Overton, 81, passed away on September 1, 2017 at Good Shepherd Hospice in Auburndale, Florida. He was born to Milvin and Rosa Overton on November 6, 1935 in Brilliant, Alabama. He was a hard working man, working in construction for 25 years, and also owning and operating Joe’s Market in Kokomo for 13 years. Joel loved to fish and camp.
Joel married his wife of 59 years, Mildred “Millie” (Smith) Overton on March 6, 1958 at Darrough Chapel. Together, they visited all 50 states, Israel, Panama Canal, and the Bahamas.
He loved to spend time with his family. He was a good husband and father.
Joel and Millie lived in Winter Haven, Florida for the past 15 years. They attended Winter Haven Christian Church every Sunday morning, Sunday evening, and Wednesday evening.
Joel is survived by his wife, Millie Overton; sons Terry (Janelle) Overton and Jeff (Monique) Overton; grandchildren Brandon (Lyndsi) Overton, Scott (Ashley) Overton, Aubrey (Derrick) Adams, Travis (Lindsay) Overton, Mitchel Overton, Tara (Shane) Everling, and Donald Kyle Erickson; great-grandchildren Keegan, Lelan, Lilé, Makynzi, Kadyn, Delany, and Lexi; siblings Bonnie Furnish (Richard) Antoine, Arville Dodd, Johnny Overton, Edward “Jim Bob” (Janet) Overton, sister-in-law Judy Walamer; and several nieces and nephews.
Joel is preceded in death by his parents Milvin and Rosa Overton; step-mother Marie Overton; son Joel Lee “Joey” Overton; brother Don Zell Overton, grandchild Ashley Nicole Overton, sisters-in-law Pam Overton and Vickie Dodd; and his dog, Molly.
Funeral service will be held on Friday, September 8 at 12:00 PM at Ellers Mortuary Webster Street Chapel. Friends and family may call from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM. Joel will be laid to rest at Greenlawn Cemetery in Greentown, Indiana.
