Kristina (Kris) Kay Hahnert Whisler, died at 2:57 am on October 8, 2018 in Dallas, Texas after a long journey battling Ovarian Cancer.
Kris was born on February 5, 1955 in Kokomo, IN to Helen Louise Norris Tarris Hahnert and Jack Louis Hahnert, who divorced in 1965 and are now deceased. She lived most of her adolescent life in Noblesville, IN graduating from Noblesville High School in 1973. She attended Indiana University in Bloomington, IN graduating with an Associate Degree in Accounting. After her marriage to high school sweetheart Larry Edward Whisler of Cicero, IN, September 4, 1976, he encouraged her return to college at IUPUI and she graduated with a BS Degree in Accounting. She obtained her CPA certification in 1985. She started her career at what was then Public Service of Indiana in Plainfield, IN in 1978, but left to work for GTE in Westfield, IN in 1985.
Kris and Larry started a family having two daughters born in Indianapolis, IN, Megan Renee Whisler born January 22, 1987, currently residing in Dallas, TX, and Kendra Marie Whisler born May 1, 1989, currently residing in Indianapolis, IN.
In 1995, Kris and her family relocated to Southlake, TX with GTE when the company moved their financial hub to Irving, TX. Kris and Larry loved their life in Texas and were able to take many memorable vacations with their family, saw their daughters pursue soccer and music, and enjoyed the companionship of many friends. Kris and her husband, who also became employed by GTE upon their relocation, had very successful careers with GTE and then with Verizon (formed from a GTE and Bell Atlantic merger in 2000). They took early retirement in 2007 and returned to Indiana as their daughters headed off to college. Kris and Larry were very proud when Megan became an attorney in Dallas, TX and Kendra pursued quality assurance based on her biotechnology education in Indianapolis, IN. Kris always felt blessed and cherished the time they spent as a family, as they matured and became her best friends.
In addition to her parents, Kris is predeceased by a half-brother Robert Duane Tarris, both sets of grandparents, all her paternal and maternal aunts and uncles, and Cousin Ronald Clawson (Janet) Fort Wayne, IN. In addition to her husband and daughters, Kris is survived by a sister, Karen Hahnert Eikenberry, Arcadia, IN, and her children Contessa Eikenberry (Felix), Michael Eikenberry (Aubrey), and Malinda Eikenberry; Paternal Cousins Kim Gerhart-Fritz (Pete) Indianapolis, IN, Anne Theohares (Nick) Pendleton, IN, Monica Cochran (William) Westfield, IN, and their children Kelly Fritz, Suzanne Fritz, Alex Theohares, Sarah Theohares, and Cole Cochran; and Maternal Cousins Kathryn Clawson Snyder Froman (Donald) Dunnellon, FL, Patricia Clawson Talcott (Dave) New Brumfield, TX, and their children Rhonda Clawson (Eldon), Charity Snyder Hyatt (David), Eric Clawson (Carrie) Christopher Clawson (Kacie) and Elizabeth Clawson Schleinost (Chuck).
Family was the focus of Kris’s life and when she retired she immediately devoted her new-found time documenting the genealogy of her and Larry’s family. She really regretted not starting it earlier, because it was too late for input from the prior generation. To coincide with that, she found a strong interest in vintage items and history, becoming a steward for many of her mother’s and paternal grandmother’s possessions. Before Kris passed, she was able to organize and pass all her research on, as well as her cherished heirlooms. Going hand in hand with genealogy, Kris documented their daughters’ significant events through scrapbooking, and then focused on completing several heritage family albums. At the same time, Kris derived the benefit of all the restoration work Larry performed on a 1976 GMC Motorhome they purchased in 2005, which they used to visit family and friends, participate in RV rallies, and marvel at natural and historic sites all over the United States.
Memorial contributions in Kris’s name may be made to the Ovarian Cancer Research Alliance or Cat’s Haven in Indianapolis.
