Phillip G. "Phill" Peters, age 83, known for his generosity and selflessness passed away on August 11, 2024, at Wellbrooke of Kokomo, Indiana. Born on December 30, 1940, in Tipton, Indiana, to Arthur and Marigrace Peters, who preceded him in death.
Phill was a proud graduate of Tipton High School, after which he embraced the thrill of speed and competition by attending McNeese State College of Lake Charles, Louisiana, on a track and field scholarship. Although his college career was short, the experiences he had there remained close to his heart. Phill's adventurous spirit led him to travel the United States until he found his calling to serve his country. In 1960, he enlisted in the United States Navy, where he served with pride and honor aboard the USS Truckee AO-147 as a quartermaster third class until 1964.
Transitioning to civilian life, Phill joined Delco General Motors in Kokomo, Indiana, dedicating 28 and a half years of service before retiring in 1993. He was a valued member of UAW Local 292.
Phill's passion for speed and racing was undeniable. His love affair with fast cars began with his cherished Ford Mustangs, particularly his Mach 1 and Boss 302. He shared countless thrilling moments with his brother Ric and later with his dear friend Russel (Rut) Dance, attending iconic races at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, Watkins Glen National Speedway, and Mid-Ohio Speedway. Phill's enthusiasm for racing wasn't confined to the tracks; he also reveled in the excitement of IndyCar races at Homestead-Miami Speedway and the energy of spring trainings for the Miami Hurricanes football team. Phill also cherished all of his time spent in the sun, usually sitting and enjoying a cold Budweiser! Clearwater and Miami beaches both held some of his fondest memories, he was often quoting, "It's 5 O'clock Somewhere," by Jimmy Buffett, and "The Tide is High and I'm Moving On," both capturing his zest for life.
Surviving relatives include his sister Fanchon Collier of Fort Myers, Florida, and Ric (Sandy) Peters of Tipton, Indiana, as well as many nieces and nephews. He was a doting godfather to Stephanie and Wayne Anderson of Miami, Indiana, and a proud honorary grandfather to Nathan and Sarah Anderson, also of Miami, Indiana. Phill's presence was a constant in his grandchildren's lives, attending all of their activities with unwavering support. His ability to make lifelong friendships with those around him was evident by the long list of people he knew and held dear to him, including Phylis Lytle, Russel "Rut" Dance, Dick Williams and Arthur Head, all of Kokomo, Indiana. These friends and many others will carry forward memories of his kindness and his spirited conversations usually having all of the answers!
A philanthropist at heart, Phill donated generously to various foundations, always ready to lend a helping hand to those in need. This same charity he so freely gave can now be seen in his friends and family who are always willing to lend a hand to help others.
Phill's legacy will continue to be honored through the countless lives he touched with his warmth and kindness.
Phill chose to be cremated, with interment at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery in Elwood, Illinois, to be scheduled at a later date. His life was a testament to the power of giving, and he will be profoundly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him. Phill G. Peters, a man of speed, sunshine and selfless love, has completed his final lap, leaving the world a better place for his journey through it.
