

William J. (Bill) Wittig, 95, of Kokomo, Indiana, fulfilled his earthly calling and took his place in heaven on Saturday, May 28, 2022. He left this world at 9:27 a.m. from his home at Jefferson Manor (Kokomo), after a lifetime of loving and serving the Lord. He was born April 16, 1927, in Indianapolis, Indiana, the son of late William G. A. and Verna (Crispen) Wittig. On July 16, 1950, he married Thelma Sue (Rogers) Wittig in Peru, Indiana. She preceded him to Glory in April, 2012.
Bill served in the United States Navy from the day he graduated high school in 1945, and was training to become a pilot when the war ended. He was a graduate of Indiana University-Bloomington, with a Bachelor of Science in chemistry. Among other jobs, he taught chemistry at Indiana University-Kokomo as an adjunct professor. He worked at Stellite for twenty-one years, and then at Delco in the chemistry lab until he retired in 1993. Bill loved fishing and gardening, but even more so he loved helping others. He was a boy scout leader, helped with fishing clinics, worked in his church’s Love Center to help provide food and clothing to the community, and he helped with the local Easter Pageant for many years. He and his wife, Thelma (Sue), taught and sang with the men at Pendleton Prison, as well as in nursing homes in the area. He was a lifetime member of Full Gospel Business Men’s Fellowship International. He encouraged believers and nonbelievers alike. He was a great man, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle, friend, and son of God.
He is survived by daughters Cynthia Wood (Alan Stites), Pamela (Robert) Campbell, Penny (Scott) Wenger, and son Dr. Gregory Wittig. Also surviving are twelve grandchildren: Travis (Martha), Sean and Troy (Megan) Heflin, Ryan (Taylor) and Chris (Cory) Wittig, Elizabeth (Mike) Mack, Rachel (Shaun) White, and Abby Campbell, and Jessica (Josh) Achey, Jordan, Seth, and Bethany Wenger, and eighteen great-grandchildren. He is also survived by siblings Rich (Wyn) Wittig, Robert (Marty) Wittig, Don (Cathy) Wittig, and Carol (Max) Ralstin. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife of 62 years, one sister, and one brother.
Friends may call from 2-6 p.m. on Saturday, June 11th, at Ellers Mortuary, 3400 S. Webster St. The funeral will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, June 12th, also at Ellers, with Fred Brown officiating. Burial will be in Mount Hope Cemetery at 411 N. Grant St. in Peru, Indiana, where he will be granted his military rites. In lieu of flowers, since Bill supported helping the homeless and veterans, the family is asking that memorial contributions may be made to C.A.M. ministries at 625 N. Union St. or to Jackson Street Commons at 322 E. Jackson St., both located in Kokomo, Indiana, 46901.
