Dr. Anthony J. Cuomo, born on December 7, 1939, in Brooklyn, New York, passed away peacefully in his La Mesa home on March 13, 2025, surrounded by his loving family. After attending Fairfield University and the New Jersey College of Medicine, he moved to San Diego in 1967, where he founded the Pulmonary Medicine and Infectious Disease Medical Group. Throughout his esteemed career, he held roles such as Director of Pulmonary and Rehabilitation Departments and Chief of Medicine at Alvarado Hospital, Clinical Professor at UCSD, and Medical Director of La Mesa Rehab and Epicyte Pharmaceutical.
Tony was a remarkable individual whose professional accomplishments were only a part of his rich and fulfilling life. Beyond his career, Tony found immense joy in fishing, often aboard his beloved boat, the "Julie Dee." Genuine to a fault, he was a man full of life, a passionate and compassionate doctor and a loyal friend to all. Known for his generosity, his sense of humor, and his ability to live in the moment, his spirit touched many lives, leaving a lasting impact on all who knew him.
He cherished his roles as a devoted father, grandfather, brother, and friend. He is predeceased by his parents, Anthony and Joan, and sister Louise Bertsche. He is survived by his sister Anne Butera; daughters Diana L. Cuomo (Timothy G. Early) and Julie A. Discenza (Kenneth Discenza); grandchildren Michael, Arwen, Anna, and Brady, and a host of extended family and friends.
In his memory, the family suggests donations to the Prostate Cancer Foundation or the American Lung Association.
