Hartwell went by the name Jerry . He was born in North Carolina to parents Willie Lee Harris and Mary Lois Ramsey and was their only child. Jerry graduated from Henderson High School in June 1953, and joined the Navy during the Korean Conflict. He married in 1956 to Barbara Howell and they had a daughter Patricia. He moved to San Diego for boot camp school where he was assigned to a ship. After four years in the Navy he had an honorable discharge and went back home to N.C for a short time and then returned to San Diego. His first job after settling in San Diego was driving a taxi for four months. Jerry then was employed by Ryan Aeronautical in 1958 until he retired in 2001 as an Electrical Design Engineer.
In 1980 Jerry met Jolaine and they were married in 1981. They joined Del Cerro Baptist Church in 1984 . Jerry taught Adult Sunday School and all his class members raved about what a excellent teacher he was. He also sang in The Joymakers choir and The Christmas Tree performances at Balboa Park . In 1989 he went back to college and got his Bachelor Degree in computer science. In 1998 his company now call Northrop Grumman gave him recognition for his contribution to the Global Hawk program which was one of the first unmanned spy planes. Jerry’s early hobbies included roller skating ,bowling and golf. In Jerry’s later years he enjoyed gardening, beach camping and traveling cross the United States, especially to visit family back in North Carolina. He also was an avid reader of mystery books. Jerry had a servants heart and love for others. He will be greatly missed. Jerry is survived by his wife Karen Jolaine Harris and daughter Patricia Daniels and step children Steve Ashcraft and Michele Jarosin. Jerry also has 10 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. His memories will forever be etched on our hearts. We can rest now knowing he’s in God’s special care.
