John Hook passed away October 24 from a battle with cancer. He was 70 years old. John was born and raised in San Diego a true native. He grew up in Spring Valley and resided in Lemon Grove for 45 years.
He attended Mt. Miguel High School where he participated in track and broke a number of county records in the days when it was talent and speed versus equipment technology. He joined a singing group The Californians affiliated with the Lemon Grove Baptist Church. The group travelled the U.S. singing in praise of the Lord. They cut a couple of records as well. The Californians were also given the opportunity to perform in a summer replacement for the Carol Burnett Show. Quite the Hollywood experience, having Nelson Riddle as the musical director and choreographers planning their moves. John worked for the California Forest Service, K-Mart Corporation and finally retired from Dixieline/Probuild in 2021.
John married Laura Milton a neighbor in 1985 and they raised two beautiful and talented daughters who were the pride and joy of his life. He was a surrogate dad to many friends who passed through our doors. This included many pets that he said he didn’t want but somehow moved in anyway! John’s love of music was shared with the neighborhood being serenaded from the backyard by his playlist, guitar or ukulele from the Tiki bar. His knowledge of Beatles music and trivia was legendary.
John was a great handyman, he could fix almost anything. He was a mentor and friend to those he worked with and met in his daily life. He had many hobbies and interests and was happiest just being home enjoying those interests and being with his friends and family. He amazed people with his knowledge of every subject known to man. Those in the know knew better than to challenge him. John was able to enjoy travel with numerous road trips in the U.S., historical trips down the Mississippi and Eastern seaboard and an enchanted boat trip in Europe.
John will be missed by all who have crossed his path during his life. A kinder man never inhabited this world. His family would like to invite friends to a Celebration of Life on December 10, 2022 at 12 noon at the H Lee House 3205 Olive St. Lemon Grove 91945.
