

Phil was born in Pittsfield, Massachusetts on February 9, 1939. He was a Chief Petty Officer in the US Navy and proudly served as a Photographer for 22 years at many duty assignments including US Naval Support Force Antarctica (Operation "Deep Freeze"), Pacific Fleet Combat Camera Group (Vietnam and Korea), US Naval Photo Center Washington DC, US Naval Station Keflavik Iceland, Headquarters Com-1 Boston, Massachusetts.
After retiring from the Navy, he worked as head of the Audiovisual Department at the University of San Diego for 26 more years.
He loved to tell stories of his adventures while in the Navy and he shared his lifelong passion of photography with his children and grandchildren.
Phil enjoyed a full and blessed life, traveling to many fun places with his wife, Alice.
In his later years, Phil loved to work on jigsaw puzzles and he finished dozens of them, his favorite being a large photo of Alice and him which was framed and displayed on a wall.. He also enjoyed crossword puzzles and going to the casino with Alice to play Bingo and the slot machines as well.
Phil enjoyed using his "fix-it" skills around the house handling various repairs and "Honey-Do" projects with David to help, he enjoyed family fun with Kathy and kids and preparing delicious meals with Linda, always leading our family in prayer.
Phil expressed his patriotism in the U.S. Navy in many ways and never left the house without his Navy hat. It was enjoyable watching many strangers approach Phil to personally thank him for his service.
Phil is also survived by his children, David Buchanan, Kathleen Buchanan, and Linda Stuart, along with 8 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren along with many nieces and nephews. Also his sisters Barbara Landry and Brenda Mayo and brother Brian Plouffe.
He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Cornelia Plouffe and his younger brother Gordon Plouffe.
Phil's memorial service will be held on Thursday, September 18, 2025 at 1:30 PM at Erickson-Anderson Mortuary at 8390 Allison Ave. La Mesa, CA 91942.
All friends and family are welcome.
Philip will be interred at the National Cemetery in Miramar on Friday, September 19 at 9:00 AM.
