Durward Brice Swanson, 100 of Maryville, TN, passed away February 20, 2022 at Ben Atchley Tennessee State Veterans Home in Knoxville, TN. Durward was born in Chipley, GA on June 12, 1921 to the late William Guy Swanson and Arlene Carter Swanson. He was a veteran of WWII and was stationed at Hickam Air Field / Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. Durward was recognized, along with Albert J. Lloyd, as having taken their tattered barracks flag down later that night. The flag is still on display at Hickam. He was a past President of the Pearl Harbors Survivors Association and was instrumental in helping to get a portion of I-185 that runs through Troup County named as The Pearl Harbor Memorial Highway. He was a member of Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church in LaGrange.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Audrey Caswell Swanson; son, Thomas Talmadge (Thom) Moncus II; grandson, Thomas Talmadge (Tal) Moncus III; and brother, WG Swanson.
He is survived by his children, Brenda K. Evans of Winston-Salem, NC; Jackie M. Rogers and Tad (Tina) Swanson of LaGrange, GA; cousin and best friend, Cass Gannaway of Sewanee, TN; grandchildren, Charli Smith (Bill) and John Burgess (Mandi); great grandchildren, Allie Spain (Justin), Will Smith, Audrey Moncus, Alexandria Burgess, TJ Moncus and Abigail Moncus; great great grandchildren, Jack Spain and Wyatt Spain; several other relatives and friends.
The gathering of family and friends will be Friday, February 25, 2022 from 10:00am until the 11:00am Celebration of Life Service at Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church with Rev. Ron Hill and Rev. Rusty Creel officiating. Burial will follow in the Sturdivant Family Cemetery with Military Honors.
Flowers will be accepted or donations may be made to Pleasant Grove UMC in memory of Audrey and Durward Swanson.
