We remember meeting him at the Hickam  event each year.  He was a fine man and a true Patriot.

On D Day, I was wondering about Mr. Swanson.  I had heard that he loved to get cards when he was staying at the Ben Atchley home, so I began sending cards whenever I would think of it.  I have a special love of WW II veterans.  No generation of Americans had it so hard and sacrificed so much (except maybe the founding fathers).  I am sorry to hear he has passed away, but I send my love and respect.  I am so honored that he chose to fight for his nation and then to come home and labor to make this nation great.  Tommy Wood

I remember meeting Mr. Swanson when I was a small child. His parents W. G. Swanson (Guy) and Miss Arlene as we called them ran a store  at the corner of Hwy. 27 and what is now Thompson Rd. in Troup Co. , Ga.  The store was only a few hundred yards from where we lived,  My Dad would catch the bus at the store to go to work , and me and my Mom would go to the store with him, and wait there until he caught the bus. I remember seeing him on several occasions when he would be visiting his parents at the store. This was after the war, as I was born in 1940.

We have pleasant memories of Mr. Swanson from the years he attended Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church, including his singing in the choir.  He was a proud veteran and well-known in LaGrange.

We were blessed to attend the 75th Anniversary of the attack on Hickam Field with Mr. Swanson. He was a very special man and we were honored to call him friend.


The Lloyd family has lost a dear loved one. Mr. Swanson was our dad's best friend. His memory will forever be honored in our family and passed down to our children and grandchildren along with all our brave Veterans.

Carol and I are saddened to hear of Durward's passing. He was a great American and we truly enjoyed his company and great stories. I will always value the times we spent together in Hawaii and here in Georgia. May he rest in peace with the love of his life.

Durward was a great, fantastic friend who gave me so much information about the war that I was born into. I had several cousins and uncles that were in the war, so talking to Durward was finally acknowledging what all those guys did for us. That is the shame of youth, you do not know how to take in what they are telling you. Durward thanks for all you did for our Country and the world. Enjoy your time in Heaven with your wonderful woman.

Durward never forgot his beloved friend, James Strickland.  During one of his December 7th trips to Hickam, he was able to attend a remembrance ceremony for James and meet members of his family.

Every year the journey back to Hickam Field was a time for remembrance and reflection.

It was a great pleasure and honor being one of Mr. Swanson’s caregivers.  It always thrilled my heart when he would recognize my voice, call my name and refer to me as a GA Peach.  Both being from GA was a little something we had in common and  we talked about home often. I enjoyed his phone calls to check in on me and was so honored when he requested I accompany him to the 2021 Pearl Harbor Day Memorial in  Knoxville this past December; which I proudly did.  I so enjoyed your stories and listening as you spoke so fondly of your pretty wife. I will always remember you with great fondness my friend! A little bit ornery but I wouldn’t have wanted you any other way. I love you. Thank you again for your service Mr. Swanson. It’s been an honor! Rest Peacefully. 

Hotrod was a nickname I gave Durward right off. I will miss him dearly. He loved to watch his Fox News with a few others friends he had at the TSVH. Me and him would sing on the way back from the dining room after breakfast when the dining room was open, he really enjoyed that. I was very blessed having Hotrod to be a part of my life and he told me that he was going to be my Guardian Angel. I know he is a very happy man due to being with his love of his life Audrey he talked about her with tears in his eyes. God bless the family for the loss of a wonderful man and a true American Hero. I will never forget my dear sweet Hotrod.
