Eugenia Hiers Newman

Mrs. Martha Eugenia (Jean) Hiers Newman, 94, of LaGrange, Georgia, passed away peacefully at her home on May 4, 2026. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 60 years, Raymond Arlon Newman, and her sister, Carole Hiers Zeigler.

Mrs. Newman was born May 4, 1932, in Augusta, Georgia to the late Lawton Gilmore Hiers and Loulie Greene Hiers. She worked as a bookkeeper in her early years, then as a devoted homemaker and later as the secretary at Southside Elementary School. She also was a secretary/bookkeeper for her son-in-law, Dr. James E. Owen, when he was Medical Director of Emergency Services at West Georgia Medical Center.

Mrs. Newman lived a long and meaningful life rooted in faith, family, and service to others. A long-time member of First United Methodist Church of LaGrange, she was a member of the Adult Fellowship Sunday School Class and served as past President of United Methodist Women and on various committees. She generously gave of her time visiting those in nursing homes, offering companionship and kindness. For many years, she volunteered alongside her husband with Meals on Wheels, where her dedication and warm spirit touched countless lives.

She was proud to have been a member of the Troup County Republican Women’s Club and enjoyed playing bridge with her friends for many decades.

Above all, she radiated the love of Christ and the joy of the Lord and was a loving mother, grandmother, and friend. Left to cherish her memory are her daughters, Kathy (James) Owen and children, Daniel and David (Wendy); Ginger Schafer (late husband, Keith) and children, Jay and Jeff (Nicole); Jane Mahan Enck (Doug) and children, Jon (Harlee), Scottie (Carrie), and Connor; Nancy (Jim) Frank and children, Matthew and Kelly, along with three precious great-grandchildren. She will also be missed by her many friends and the very special caregivers who loved and cared for her during her last years.
