Dr. Garnett “Jay” Giesler, Jr., passed away peacefully surrounded by the love of his family. A devoted husband, father, grandfather, physician, and servant leader, Jay lived a life defined by faith, compassion, and an unwavering commitment to others.
Born on July 6, 1942, in Decatur, Georgia, Jay grew up in the Kirkwood community and was the son of the late Garnett J. Giesler, Sr. and Susan Morris Giesler. He graduated from Emory University before earning his medical degree from the Medical College of Georgia. Following his internship, Jay proudly served his country in the United States Air Force as a Flight Surgeon.
In 1975, Jay began his medical practice in LaGrange, Georgia, where he would leave a lasting mark on the community he loved. A visionary physician, he established the area’s first pulmonary function and sleep study laboratory. Jay often described medicine not simply as his profession, but as his mission and calling in life. For more than 30 years, he cared for patients through Clark-Holder Clinic, where he also served as president. His dedication, compassion, and commitment to excellence earned the respect and admiration of colleagues, patients, and friends alike.
Beyond his medical practice, Jay devoted himself wholeheartedly to the LaGrange community. He served as President of the Rotary Club, was a member of the Leadership Council and Board of Trustees of LaGrange College, and served on the boards of West Georgia Medical Center and Synovus Bank. He was active in the Tri-State Thoracic Society and generously gave his time to organizations including Troup Cares and the Sons of Lafayette singing group. For many years, Jay coordinated athletic physicals for Troup County students and found great joy in supporting local athletic programs and encouraging young people.
Of all the roles he held throughout his life, none brought him greater pride than those of husband, father, and grandfather. Jay loved his family deeply and faithfully prayed for each member by name every night.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Linda Giesler; his children, Laurel Lynn (Larry) Bruce, Gary (Lisa) Giesler, and Courtney (Lucas) Mann; his grandchildren, Alex Bruce, Philip Bruce, Morgan Giesler, Marisa Giesler, and Charlie Mann; his sister-in-law, Pam (Gene) Giesler; his nieces and nephews, Matthew (Lauren) Giesler, Anna (Thomas) Sanders, and Dale Long; and his cousin, Joe (Linda) Morris.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Jim Giesler; and his sister, Pat Long.
Jay was a former deacon and faithful member of First Baptist Church on the Square in LaGrange, where he sang in the church quartet and especially loved performing his favorite song, “A Few Good Men.” For decades, he met every Friday morning with a Bible study group consisting of Mike Patton, Buddy Kirk, Danny Daniel, Allen Keeble, Mickey McCoy, Raymond Moody, and Whit Perry—men he affectionately referred to as his “brothers.”
Jay’s life was a testament to his faith in Jesus Christ, his devotion to family, and his heart for serving others. Whether caring for a patient, encouraging a friend, or praying for a loved one, he lived with humility, kindness, and purpose. His family takes comfort in knowing that he has heard the words, “Well done, good and faithful servant,” and now rests in the presence of his Lord and Savior.
