Horace H. "Doc" Steele

Mr. Steele was born August 19, 1935 in LaGrange, son of the late Howard Glover Steele and Carrie Edith Cranford Steele. He was retired from the U.S. Army as a medic after 20 years of service during which time he served in Vietnam. During his military career, he received numerous medals including the National Defense Service Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, Good Conduct Medal (5th award), Army Occupation Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with 3 Bronze Stars, Vietcampaign Medal, and the Army Commendation Medal.

Mr. Steele was a member of Lakeview Baptist Church and was retired from Duracell Company as a machinist. He was a member and Past Master of the Elm City Masonic Lodge and later with the Long Cane Masonic Lodge. Mr. Steele was a 32nd Degree Mason, member of the Shriner’s, Scottish Rites, and also served as the director of works for the Masonic Lodges. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Mottis McGuire and a son, Alvin “Butch” Steele.

Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Louise Townley Steele of Five Points, AL; five children, Susie McLeroy of LaGrange; Charles Bruce of Ellijay, GA, Tim Steele of Luthersville, GA, Rocky Steele of Five Points, AL, and Deborah Byrd of Five Points, AL; 11 grandchildren; and 20 great grandchildren.

Funeral services, with full military honors, will be held 11:00 A.M. Thursday, May 29, 2014 in the Chapel of Striffler-Hamby Mortuary with Reverend Tommy McLeroy and Reverend Lamar Truitt officiating. Burial will follow in Restlawn Memory Gardens. The gathering of family and friends will be Wednesday evening from 6:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. at the funeral home.

Flowers will be accepted or contributions may be made to Lakeview Baptist Church, 267 Maley Road, LaGrange, GA 30240 in memory of Mr. Horace H. “Doc” Steele.
