Martha Solomon

She was born on April 1, 1918 in LaGrange, Ga. She was the daughter of the late Ellis Solomon and Kamily Maloof Solomon, the founders of Solomon’s Department Store. Martha was a graduate of LaGrange High School and LaGrange Business College. She was employed by Southern Bell Telephone Company for 10 years. In 1950, at the request of her father, she joined the family business. He had begun an expansion acquiring two adjacent buildings on either side Solomon’s original main store. Martha joined her sister Margaret as co-managers of various departments. They often accompanied their father to the buying markets in Atlanta. After the death of their father, in 1969, after 20 years of service, Martha and Margaret joined their sister Anne Mike in establishing Anne’s Dress Shop. Martha was a charter member of St. Peter’s Catholic Church. She assisted in the formation of the Ladies’ Altar Guild and often attended regional meetings at the Catholic Diocese in Atlanta. Martha had a green thumb, which she inherited from her mother Kamily. She was an expert gardener. She was also an avid reader and enjoyed knitting. She often gifted family members and friends with her creations. She was predeceased by her parents and two sisters, Elizabeth Jabaley and Anne Mike.

She is survived by two sisters, Margaret Solomon of LaGrange and Bette Azar (Phillip) of El Paso, Texas, one brother, Charlie Solomon of LaGrange, one brother-in-law, Thomas Mike, Sr. of LaGrange, and many nieces and nephews with whom she loved and especially enjoyed spoiling.

A memorial service in celebration of Martha’s life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 8, 2010 at St. Peter’s Catholic Church with Father Kevin Hargaden officiating.

The family will receive friends on Friday, May 7, 2010 from 6-7 p.m. followed by a rosary service at St. Peter’s Catholic Church, Father Kevin Hargaden officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Peter’s Catholic Church or to a charity of your choice.
