Norman Paul Loftin

Mr. Norman P. Loftin 90, of Dothan, Alabama, formerly of LaGrange, Georgia died Sunday morning August 11, 2013 in Dothan, AL, after a brief illness. He was born January 1, 1923 to the late Sallie Mae Mooty and Richard F. Loftin. Mr. Loftin served in the US Navy during WWII aboard the USS Gherardi. Norman was a crew member of the Gherardi as it provided fire support at Utah Beach on D day June 6th, 1942 and was part of the fleet in Tokyo Bay during the Japanese surrender September 2, 1945. Norman was a former member of the LaGrange Kiwanis Club, Loyal Order of Moose, Lodge 28 of the Free & Accepted Masons and the LaGrange Elks Lodge.

Mr. Loftin was married to the love of his life, Barbara Lindsey, from November 20, 1955 until her death December 25, 1984. He was a lifelong member of First Baptist Church of LaGrange.

Mr. Loftin retired from CB&T in 1978 and worked in the Probate Office during elections and as a volunteer at West Georgia Medical Center. He was the first resident of the Vernon Crest of Vernon Woods Retirement Community in August of 2000. He lived there until April of 2013 when he moved to Dothan to be near his nephew, Lamar Loftin and wife Janet.

Mr. Loftin was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara Lindsey Loftin; his brothers, James, Truman, Robert and Owen; sisters, Mary Lou Thaxton, Geraldine Wood, Katie Daniel and Jean Frost.

He is survived by nieces, Jeanelle Daniel, Bernice Scott, Judy Crowder, Vickie Cottle, and Jeannine Williams; nephews, Richard Loftin, David Loftin, Lamar Loftin, Bob Loftin, Sherrill Loftin, Wayne Daniel, Theron Daniel, and Kenneth Daniel.

Crypt side services will be held Tuesday August 13, 11:00 AM at Shadowlawn Mausoleum with Rev. Max McCord officiating. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to Covenant Hospice, 104 Rock Bridge Road, Dothan Alabama 36303
