Sue was born in Millen, Georgia on June 30, 1947. Growing up, she loved visiting the family farm, playing with her beloved sisters, and dancing. Studying ballet, she cultivated the strength and dignity that she carried throughout her life.
She married her high school sweetheart, Bill Barnwell, on September 6, 1969. They were fierce friends and resilient partners throughout more than half a century of wedded bliss. They had the wisdom from a young age to surround themselves with other couples who prioritized family, faith and friends. Their beloved friends from high school in Columbus and their Dinner Club count among the many who mourn Sue.
Sue and Billy were overjoyed to become parents, welcoming Kristen, then Rebecca. Sue knew her girls were miraculous gifts from God, and that conviction shaped their childhoods. Sue and Billy raised their daughters to have good manners, a deep faith, and to cheer for Auburn. Sue loved to cook for others and was an accomplished hostess. The Barnwells’ Christmas Eve parties remain legendary.
Sue earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Early Childhood Education, a Master’s Degree, then her Real Estate license, but she was proudest of being a loving friend, sister, aunt, wife, mother, and Nana. Her grandsons know most deeply the wonderful soul the world has lost. Her legacy of love and laughter will live on through Reid, Davis, Charlie and Hayden.
She is predeceased by her grandmother Mary Bell Clark, grandfather Charles Aaron Clark, parents Dorothy & U.S. Army Retired Lt. Col. Guy Lloyce Tucker, and Uncle Seab.
She is survived by her beloved husband William Graham Barnwell III, daughters Kristen Enlow (Brian) and Rebecca Patrus (Walt), grandsons Reid and Davis Enlow and Charles and Hayden Patrus, sisters Heidi Graziano (Tony) and Cindy Maher, and many cherished nieces and nephews.
Sue filled this world with joy, warmth and laughter. She will be deeply missed, even as her loved ones are comforted knowing that she rests in the eternal presence of God.
Her funeral will be Sunday, July 20th at 3:00pm in the Chapel of Striffler Hamby Mortuary LaGrange, with visitation preceding from 2:00pm - 3:00pm.
All arrangements are made by Striffler-Hamby Mortuary, 1010 Mooty Bridge Road, LaGrange, GA 30240 (706) 884-8636.
